Case Study: Corporate Lifestyle Photography for Teradyne in North Reading

Lifestyle photography of three employees conversing in a hallway at Teradyne of North Reading, MA.

Teradyne’s corporate marketing team hired Mark Mendoza Photography to create a library of workplace images showing employees collaborating throughout its North Reading offices, laboratories, and shared spaces.

Designed primarily for recruitment marketing and social media, the photographs needed to help prospective employees see both the people and the working environment behind Teradyne’s technology.

For this Teradyne corporate lifestyle photography assignment, the employees—not the equipment—were the primary focus. The goal was to present Teradyne as an innovative, collaborative, and welcoming place to build a career.

Putting Employees at the Center of the Story

Although we photographed engineers and technicians working around several of Teradyne’s systems, the technology played a supporting role.

The photographs needed to show what working at Teradyne actually looked and felt like: team members exchanging ideas, engineers working together in laboratory environments, and employees interacting throughout the workplace.

This people-focused approach helped communicate more than the company’s technical capabilities. It gave prospective employees a sense of the culture, working relationships, and environment they could expect if they joined the organization.

Showcasing a Newly Updated Workplace

Teradyne had recently renovated several areas of its North Reading location and was eager to feature those improvements in its recruiting materials.

The assignment included photography throughout:

  • Offices
  • Engineering laboratories
  • Break areas
  • Shared workspaces
  • The lobby and other communal areas

Photographing this range of spaces gave the marketing team a varied image library rather than a collection of similar scenes. The final photographs could be used individually for specific recruitment messages or collectively to present a broader picture of life at Teradyne.

Balancing Natural Light in a Large Lobby

One of the principal lighting challenges was Teradyne’s expansive two-story lobby, which features floor-to-ceiling windows.

The abundant window light made the space visually impressive, but it also created a significant difference between the brightness of the windows and the people inside. Relying solely on the available light could have left employees underexposed or caused the window areas to become overly bright.

I balanced the existing window light with professional strobes to illuminate the employees while preserving the natural character of the space. The goal was to create a polished, evenly lit photograph without making the lighting feel artificial.

This balance was especially important because the lobby itself was part of the story. The images needed to showcase the scale and design of the renovated space while keeping the employees at the center of the composition.

Helping Employees Look Natural on Camera

Most employees are not professional models, and asking them simply to “act natural” rarely produces convincing photographs. Successful corporate lifestyle photography requires enough direction to create a strong composition without making the interaction appear staged.

Before each scene, I advised employees to bring everyday workplace items such as:

  • Coffee cups
  • Laptops
  • Notebooks

These items gave participants something natural to do with their hands and helped establish a believable workplace activity.

I also encouraged team members to talk among themselves while I photographed them. Their conversations produced more relaxed expressions and natural interactions than conventional posed photographs would have provided.

My role was to direct where employees stood, how they related to the environment, and how the scene was composed while allowing the interaction between them to remain genuine.

A Recruitment-Focused Image Library

Teradyne received a collection of high-resolution JPEG files suitable for its recruitment marketing and social media communications.

The completed image library showed prospective employees the range of environments within the North Reading location—from advanced laboratories and offices to communal spaces where employees could meet and collaborate.

Teradyne was happy with the results and used the photographs to promote its recruitment efforts.
